No knitting needles required!

This is not even arm knitting; it's finger knitting or paw knitting. In less than an hour, you'll have a gorgeous coating for your decor.

I'm certain you've seen these chunky knit blankets before. They are one of the elevation-selling items on Etsy.

And they can cost hundreds of dollars if you want to buy one.

I initially glazed over them as a DIY because I idea it was too big of a project and besides complicated to make.  But, I'one thousand here to tell y'all it'southward not!

So, today I'm going to show you lot how to knit a chunky coating.

You lot can totally do this!

The reason I fifty-fifty started this coating project was considering my husband really wanted 1 for our living room.

He loves the look of them and let's be honest — we could always apply another blanket effectually here!

Simply I simply couldn't wrap my head effectually spending that amount of money on a throw blanket!

And so, I set my crafty intentions towards making my own.

For starters, the yarn can be expensive. Secondly, this is non one of those quickie projects.

What kind of Yarn exercise I need to Make a Chunky Blanket?

To brand a mesomorphic knit blanket, yous want to use Jumbo yarn.  This is size 7 yarn.  The size is denoted on the yarn packaging.

Some considerations:

• Toll:  If you want to make the mesomorphic blankets that yous see everywhere right now, almost of them are using wool roving yarn, which is sold in giant balls by weight.  These assurance are quite pricey (usually $30+/pound), simply they make the all-time looking chunky blanket (in my opinion).  Yous can still make a overnice blanket with cheaper yarn, as I did.  Information technology's all personal preference.
• Feel: You might like a softer, chenille type blanket, or maybe you want the heavy feel of super jumbo wool yarn.  If yous can go out to the craft stores and feel and see the unlike yarns, I encourage you to do so.

How Much Chunky Yarn Do I Need?

This is such a tough question to answer because there are so many factors at play but I'm going to try and make information technology easier for you.

I used 12 skeins of Large Twist Ribbon Yarn (camel colored yarn) and my blanket ended up being about 34 inches wide by 52 inches long – which is slightly larger than a lap throw.

And then, my advice is to have note of how many yards/pounds are in each skein of yarn.  Some jumbo yarn comes in gigantic assurance and is sold by weight (1lb, 2lb, 3lb, etc). You'll demand about 4 lbs of super chunky wool roving yarn to brand a overnice, lap-sized blanket.

Other factors to consider:

• how tight you make your stitches.  The tighter the sew = the more chunky yarn you demand.  (I prefer a tight stitch because the loose ones wait sloppy to me.)
• How jumbo and stretchy your yarn is.  Again – yarn tin can be different, some are fluffier and stretchier than others.
• The bigger the yarn ball, the less knots yous will need to create – so that'due south an advantage.  You lot'll understand this more equally I explain below.

How Much Does it Cost to Brand a Chunky Knit Coating?

If you lot want the merino wool roving yarn for your blanket, yous're gonna pay for it. Expect to spend over $100 for all the yarn you will need to brand a blanket.

If you don't want to spend that much (like me), you can get away with spending less than $l for a whole blanket. Even less if yous play your coupons right.

Michael's and Joann Stores seem to exist the best for getting the cheaper yarn, just don't be surprised if information technology's all sold out in the store (and sometimes online, also.) You merely have to check oftentimes and purchase in bulk when information technology's available.

How to Brand a Chunky Knit Blanket

Footstep 1:  Create a Slip Knot to Showtime your Blanket

The mode to start your blanket is to create a simple slip knot.

Take your yarn, wrap it around your hand to create a loop.  With your other paw, pull the working yarn through the loop and tighten.  You should take something that looks like this:

Step 2:  Create a Braided Chain from Your Slip Knot

Lay your slip knot downwards.  We are going to create a unproblematic chain of stitches.  The length of this chain will decide the length of the blanket.

Attain through the skid knot you created and pull the working yarn through to create a run up.  Repeat this procedure, pulling the working yarn through each new loop you create.

Continue until you reach the desired length of your coating.  I made 25 stitches.

Step 3:  Create Your Start Row of Stitches

Take the chain of stitches you lot but created and flip it over.

Encounter those footling bumps in the heart?

We are going to accept 2 fingers and pull the working cord through that little bump to create a loop on superlative.  Don't worry about the last loop on the concatenation, we'll become back to that.

Go along creating loops with each piddling bump, all the way to the stop of the chain.

You lot'll now accept your offset row of stitches done!

Pace 4:  Create Your 2d Row of Stitches

At present we are going to repeat footstep 3, going the opposite way.

Pull the working cord through each loop that you created in Stride 3, creating a loop on tiptop of this loop.

There are ii important things you demand to remember when creating rows of stitches:

1. When starting a row, e'er skip the first loop in the row.  Start with the 2d loop.
2. Always include the final loop of every row.

I recommend making the last stitch in each row a scrap tighter.  If you make it too loose, your coating will feel kind of loosey-goosey and sloppy.

This design of stitching rows is how you will create your coating.  You are just pulling the working yarn through the loops each time.  Every bit you do this, yous volition start to see a pattern of braids emerge on your coating.

It's all starting to come together!

Step five:  How to Attach More Yarn To Your Blanket

At some point, you lot will run out of yarn and need to attach more than yarn.  How do we do this?

We just take the stop of the erstwhile yarn and adhere it to the beginning of the new yarn past tying a strong knot.  Be conscientious that you don't pull too difficult and rip through your yarn.  Once you lot tie a knot, cut off the two loose ends.

We can hide the knot under stitches and on the underside of the blanket.  Even if you lot can't seem to hide information technology in one row of stitches, you can commonly use the next row of stitches to hide the knot.

You will repeat this process as many times every bit yous need to add together yarn.  In my case – 11 times!

Some yarns are more forgiving with this than others.  Recall that Bernat Blanket Large Yarn?  MUCH easier to hibernate the knots with this yarn because information technology's and then fluffy.

Footstep 6:  How to Tie Off A Chunky Knit Coating

At this point, you have a blanket size yous're happy with.  You want to make certain y'all have enough working yarn leftover to close information technology off.  If not, you can merely disengage a row or two of stitches until you practise.

To close off your coating, you are going to take two loops and pull your working cord through creating some other loop.  Then take that new loop and the next loop in the line, and pull some other loop of working string through.

Continue this procedure all the fashion across until you get to the final loop.

Once yous are at the final loop, you will still accept a tail.  It might be a long tail or a short tail depending on where y'all finished.  If you have a very long tail leftover, cut information technology off and so you lot're left with a shorter tail – about 6 inches or so.

Pull that shorter tail through the terminal loop all the way, creating a tight knot.  Then, y'all tin can weave the tail into your blanket, in and out of the stitches equally you see fit.

You tin can also do this with the little tail that was created in Step one.

And that's it!
